In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone

When my eyes were stabbed
by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs
that voices never share
And no one dare disturb
the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, " You do not know
silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
and echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
to the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said,
"The words of the prophets are written
on the subway walls
and tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence

침묵의 소리

안녕, 내 오랜 친구 어둠이여
나, 너와 다시 얘기하러 왔어
내가 잠자는 동안 환영이 부드럽게
기어다니며 그 씨앗들을 남겼거든
그리고 그 환영은 내 뇌 속에 심어져
아직도 남아 있어
침묵의 소리 속에

편치 못한 꿈들 속에서 난 혼자 걸었어
가로등 후광 아래
자갈들 깔린 좁다란 거리를
추위와 습기 때문에 난 옷깃을 세웠어
그리고 밤을 산산조각내며
침묵의 소리를 건드는 
네온 불빛의 번쩍거림이
내 두 눈에 와 박혔어 

그리고 밝게 드러난 그 불빛 속에서 난 보았어
수만 명 아니 어쩜 그 이상의 사람들을
소리 없이 대화를 나누는 사람들
귀 기울이지 않고 듣는 사람들
목소리가 감당 못할 노래들을 작곡하는 사람들
그리곤 아무도 감히
침묵의 소리를 깨지 못했어

"바보들."
내가 말했지.
"당신들은 몰라
침묵은 암처럼 자라난다는 걸.
내가 가르쳐 줄 테니 내 말들 들어 봐.
내가 두 팔을 뻗을 테니 그걸 잡아 봐."
그러나 내 말들은 소리 없는 빗방울들처럼 떨어져
침묵의 우물들 안에서 메아리쳤어

그리고 사람들은 절을 하며 빌었어
자신들이 만든 네온 신을 향해
그러자 홀연 계시가 나타나 경고했고
그 계시가 글씨들 모양으로 변했어 
그 계시는 이랬지.
"예언자들 말씀이,
지하철 벽과 건물들 홀에 써 있노라."
그리곤 침묵의 소리로 속삭였어...
